services for Margarette “Cotton” Steadham, 86, of Wills Point are scheduled
for 11:00, AM Monday, December 3, 2007, at First Christian Church in Wills Point.
Burial will follow at White Rose Cemetery under the direction of Hiett’s LyBrand
Margarette passed away November 29, 2007, at her residence in Wills Point.
Margarette Johnson was born March 7, 1921, in Wills Point to the late Willie
George and Inez Lena Spires Johnson. She was raised west of Wills Point near
the community of Cobb. She was a life long resident of Wills Point, where she
attended the Wills Point Schools and graduated with the Class of 1941. She was
drafted to play professional softball in California and Texas; however, after
seeing her two brothers join the Armed Forces, she too felt the need to serve
her country. She joined the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corp and was trained in aircraft
recognition and radar at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. While serving in Norfolk,
Virginia she met Petty Officer, Lewis C. Steadham of Georgia and on September
27, 1943, in Heflin, Alabama they were united in marriage. After the war, they
returned to Wills Point, where she was both a homemaker and nurse for nearly
forty years. Margarette had been a member of First Christian Church in Wills
Point since the age of fourteen.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lewis Steadham, brothers,
William Johnson, Daroe Johnson and S.J. Johnson and granddaughter, Cheryl Elizabeth
Margarette is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Steadham Bunch, (Class of 1964)
of Saratoga, Arkansas; son, Steve Steadham, (Class of 1966) and wife, Judy of
Edgewood; grandchildren, Stacey Ellis and husband, Charlie of Wills Point, Kyle
Steadham of Plano, Stevan Johnston of Alba and Charles Bunch and wife, Amber
of Wills Point; great-grandchildren Zach Johnston, Brittany Johnston, Brian
Nichols, Hailey Bunch and Sarah Ellis; great-great-grandchildren, Dylan Nichols
and Collin Nichols; and of course, Ty, her kitty.
Visitation will be held on Monday morning, one hour prior to service time, at
